Anchorman #1

Abe Slyzinsky: Johnny, pack a suitcase quick. We are moving.

John Slyzinski: But dad, what's the matter. Why.

Abe: We are in a lot of trouble unless we move quick, Johnny. You know the trouble I've mentioned at work and the suspicions I've had? They now know I know. And that means we probably do not have enough time for... Well for anything. We have to leave now.

Johnny: No way dad. I'm 16 now and I want to stay.

Abe: Johnny, you don't understand. This isn't a little father and son game about rights and privileges. This is literally life and death.  Even if you stayed your life would not go on as you planned, if it went on at all. Those people I told you about are evil. They are powerful and have managed to subvert at least a portion of the defense industry for their purposes and they know you know about it. And at least as important, they know they can get to me through you. We have to disappear, now.

Johnny: But how? If we...

Abe: Just pack son or you will not be the one asking the questions.

Johnny packed quickly and in silence. When he was done he found his father sitting on the sofa with his device all hooked up and a suitcase on his lap. He looked almost like a medusa. By his side was Johnnys device. A more simple version Johnny had put together based on lessons his father gave him. In some ways a better force field generator, but in others vastly inferior.

Abe: Put yours on and activate it.

As both of the men activated their devices, they heard sirens approaching from the distance. Abe was frozen immobile by the effects of his device. All movements of his body held in stasis by kinetic energy absorbing affects, his neural commands interpreted and translated into gravitational affects. Later to be known as Anchorman, Abe more closely resembled an alien than the human he was. Johnnys device worked differently and allowed full movement but was not nearly as impenetrable as his fathers. Johnny had dreams of becoming a super-hero while his father just worried about staying alive and being able to one day return the device into trustworthy hands.

A shimmering enveloped Johnny as the Telekinetic powers of Abes device reached out and trapped Johnny in its gravitational embrace. Abe quickly rocketed out through the front window spraying shards of glass in all directions and shot up into the night moments before the police arrived. Quickly gaining velocity, both Johnny and Abe approached the sound barrier. But wanting to avoid attention Abe restrained his velocity and kept low. It was night and the force field absorbed light.  At this speed no one should notice his passage. It took very little time to travel from LA to NY and once again Abe marveled at the invention he spent the last 10 years on. It's potential for mankind was incredible. Just a few days ago he had even been able to work out the mathematics that would allow him to break the speed of light. Damn!.... Damn, Damn!!! All that work and all the good it could do had to be put on hold until he could discover who the hell infiltrated upper management. Had he not done what he did it would not have been Uncle Sam that controlled the device. Fortunately the breakthrough came after he became suspicious. If nothing else, there was no way they were going to be able to duplicate the device without his help. Good for the country, bad for his family.

The next few days were spent in a frenzy while Abe found a place to stay and started looking for work as a Tutor. He was able to impress the principle of a nearby High School which proved a god-send. It would not be easy, but tutoring had one big advantage, it paid in cash under the table. He could also do some informal electronics work for neighbors. Christmas was coming up and he could set up quite a light display if he could find someone interested. He could not afford to have any institutional connections and that meant no drivers license, no social security card, no bank account, etc. Even a library card was out of the question. And there was no way he could send Johnny to school. It had to be home-schooling from now on. Fortunately, that was an acceptable trend nowadays and Johnny was already mostly home educated now. His grasp of physics surpassed most of his colleagues at work. A feeling of vast pride welled up in Abes throat which turned to depression as he realized how difficult this kind of life was going to be for his son.

Abe then fixed his thoughts on uncovering the source of his troubles.  That mysterious criminal group he was able to learn so little about before he fled. Abe was brilliant but he was no super-spy. The mysterious additional ISDN lines leading out of the black-box building led somewhere, but where. Those e-mail addresses some of the reports were being sent to that he had no face for, and no idea how to trace.  The calls made by his manager to Venezuela. He had a few leads he could follow up thanks to his eidetic memory. The tones of that number were permanently embedded in his memory. But the last time he started asking questions it merely blew his cover. How could he ask all the questions he needed answering without bringing "them" down on his head.   One thing was for sure. He was over his head and needed help, more help than the public library could give him. And time was NOT on HIS side. At least if he kept quiet for a while there is NO way they were going to be able to find him. And they can only guess at the current state of the device. He had a chance, no matter how slim.
