Emergency Session Jay Shaffstall
This time the room was brightly lit, but the men and woman around the table looked no less serious for it. The chairman raised a hand to silence the others.
"We all know why we're here. For the first time in years, people are getting too damned close." The chairman motioned toward a younger man. "Fill us in on the London organization."
"Ah, yes." The young man smiled slightly, and then stopped. "We had in place a small organization in London progressing quite nicely with our psychic program. That is, suppression of and disinformation about legitimate psychic abilities. Some months ago, they kidnapped a man running psychic testing out of a university. A woman escaped by teleporting away."
Groans went up around the table. The lone woman at the table shook her head. "I'll have to push that project for the miniature teleportation nullifier. We can't afford these kinds of problems."
The young man nodded. "It gets worse. Somehow Avalon became involved..." more groans "...and now our London organization is hard at work making certain no convicted felons are psychic."
"They're in jail?"
The chairman raised his hand again. "Give them the rest of it," he said to the woman.
"Cheshire's getting close to some parts of it on her end, as well. You all know her project was responsible for the psychic deadening devices our agents use. Apparently she isn't satisfied to be led around the country and make trouble where we'd like; she's hunting for the truth about what happened at the project. She stumbled on the Omega Corp connection."
One man actually laid his head on the table. The others merely looked dour.
"Now, I know it looks bad," the chairman said, "but we've weathered worse problems than this. I propose, since both Avalon and Cheshire will be looking for some shadowy organization intent on controlling psychic development, that we give them such an organization."
The man with his head on the table looked up quickly, thought a moment, and nodded.
"You know, that just might work."
