Angel

Angel always appears wearing flowing white robes and claims to be sent by God to punish the unbelievers.  She's most often seen at crowded places such as concerts, political rallies, and televangelist shows trying to make the unbeleivers see the error of their ways.  This usually involves a force blast from her hand.  Angel is known to be able to turn insubstantial at will.

Anomaly

Anomaly is part of the Los Angeles based Guardians, a team recruited by Golden Gate.   Anomaly typically doesn't seem to do anything directly, but has the ability to cause incredibly unlikely events to happen.  During battle, Anomaly most often troubleshoots for the team, helping out anyone in trouble.

Armature

Armature is arguably the strongest super in the history of supers.  His origins are unknown, as Armature kept to himself during his career.  Early in 1990, Armature left Earth for space.  No announcement was made to the press, but other heroes speculated that Armature was worried about his ability to control his ever increasing strength.

Beguile

A psionic member of the Guardians, this heroine was revealed to the world as a villain during the trial of the Epee.  Beguile used her mental abilities to infiltrate the Guardians and served as a member in good standing for some time.  Her reasons for infiltrating the Guardians are unknown.

Brainstorm

Brainstorm is part of the Los Angeles based Guardians, a team recruited by Golden Gate.   Brainstorm is a mental genius, able to cobble together a working force field generator from a couple of vacuum tubes and an old toaster.  While Brainstorm typically does not enter into battle, if forced to fight he always has gadgets ready for both offense and defense.

Buttress

Buttress is part of the Los Angeles based Guardians, a team recruited by Golden Gate.   Buttress is able to project stone from his body, formed in nearly any shape.   During battle, he fires pellets or shards of stone (depending on his foe), and used a layer of stone to protect against attacks.  He has been known to form walls of stone thirty feet high to protect bystanders from a battle.

Captain Infinity

Captain Infinity is an enigmatic hero.  He appears in times of need and provides invaluable advice to other heroes.  In the rare cases where he's taken an active role in events, he has shown himself to be incredibly powerful.  The exact nature of his powers seems to change from time to time, however.

Carver

The Carver is that most dangerous of supervillains, a psychotic.  The Carver terrorized the city of New York for months during 1992 with a killing spree that left dozens dead.  Conventional forces were unequipped to deal with a super serial killer.   The killing spree finally ended with reported sightings of the Mortician in New York.  The killing stopped, and the Carver is presumed dead.

Chariot

Chariot is a Miami based hero currently recovering from near-fatal wounds received in a battle with Skein.  Chariot's powers are primarily flight, strength, and speed.   Before his injuries, Chariot was the official superhero of Miami and maintained a base in town.  That base was subsequently destroyed while Chariot was hospitalized.

The Conjunction

Nothing is known about the origin or causes of the Conjunction.  Sufficient cases have happened to allow a pattern to emerge: a normal human is subject to some gross injustice that threatens the very fabric of their being.  In some inexplicable fashion, the person becomes host to the Conjunction and gains amazing powers for a twenty-four hour period.  In that period the person has the power to see justice done.  Hosts report no knowledge of what the Conjunction is or how it happened.

Dr. Cronos

A Nazi war criminal who continues his studies into genetics.  Such studies usually revolve around breeding superhumans to form an army for world domination.  While Cronos is physically unassuming, he is considered one of the most dangerous villains alive.

Crystal Melody

Crystal Melody was a Los Angeles based superheroine serving intermittently with the Guardians.  Her primary powers derived from her voice and singing.  Crystal Melody is presumed dead after a battle with Hadron.

Duke Barren

Duke Barren is a freelance journalist with a decidedly pessimistic view on supers.   Duke believes not only that the presence of superheroes draws supervillains, but that the general trend towards more and more supers is an accelerating trend toward planetary Armageddon.  For all that, Duke is a decent journalist, if not welcomed by many supers.

The Epee

A "gentleman" supervillain who uses an electrified sword, primarily a thief, but who served as an assassin for the psionic supervillain Beguile when she infiltrated the Guardians at the beginning of her career. At the Epee’s trial, he accused Beguile of rape, leading to her eventual exposure as a supervillain

Feminine Grace

Feminine Grace is a radical feminist superheroine, with the abilities of strength, speed, and agility.  Critics have said that criminals surrender not because of her physical prowess, but just to stop the litany of extreme feminist rhetoric that always accompanies a battle with her.  Feminine Grace claims to be the personification of the unconscious desire of oppressed women everywhere to be free.

Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a soldier who was court-martialed in a sexual harassment scandal in 1993. He bears an exceptionally strong grudge towards Hillary Clinton, and attempted to assassinate her in 1997.  Flagstaff's powers seem to be  primarily teleportation, as well as excellent tactical knowledge from his military career.   Flagstaff is the leader of the Mockery Brigade.

Golden Gate

A California based hero, Golden Gate used his light powers to defend his home state against all manner of threats.  During one fateful battle with Reflection, one of Golden Gates energy blasts was reflected into a crowd of bystanders.  Reflection escaped, and the media blamed Golden Gate for the injuries and deaths that resulted.   Over the next year, Golden Gate suffered a number of defeats and public trust in him plummeted.  Dropping out of the limelight Golden Gate founded a super-team called the Guardians, and lends his experience to training other members of the group.

Grey Veil

Grey Veil was Armature's nemesis during the early days of his career.  She controlled a criminal empire that encompassed much of the underworld activity in major U.S. cities.  The only thing that kept this empire together was the force of presence of the Grey Veil herself.  When she became enamored of Armature and spent more time actively working on plots targeted at Armature, her empire splintered.  When Armature left Earth, the Grey Veil dropped out of sight as well, telling confidants that the excitement of the game was gone.  Descriptions of the Grey Veil vary, but all have her at middle-age during the 1970's.

Greyskull

Greyskull wears a costume that resembles the 1980s cartoon character He-Man.   Heroes who have fought him in battle attest to his similarity to that cartoon character; Greyskull is strong and can both take and dish out large doses of physical punishment.  Greyskull operates as a member of the Mockery Brigade.

Guardians

A California super-team with their headquarters in Los Angeles, the Guardians were formed by veteran hero Golden Gate.  Golden Gate rarely appears with the team in public, however, due to his poor reputation.  The team currently consists of Anomaly, Buttress, Brainstorm, Halftrack, Photon, and Prism.

Hadron

A villain with the dangerous ability to disintigrate any matter, living or non-living.   While his power use has typically been restricted to disintegrating non-living objects, he has on occasion used it on living opponents.  Past battles suggest that Hadron is easily panicked, and if backed into a corner will disintegrate anything nearby.

Halftrack

Halftrack is part of the Los Angeles based Guardians, a team recruited by Golden Gate.   Halftrack is so named because of his military nature.  Halftrack dresses in camoflauge fatigues, and uses weapons and armor created by Brainstorm.

Hammer

Hammer is a Minneapolis based hero who wields, appropriately enough, a hammer as a weapon.  His defenses include an incredibly strong biometric force field.   Hammer is known to work with Lightning Girl.

Hammer and Tongs

A pair of supervillains, Hammer and Tongs used powered battlesuits with special weaponry for their crimes.  Hammer is a white male whose battlesuit has a powered jackhammer, and Tongs is an oriental woman whose battlesuit features a powered clamp suitable for crushing engine blocks.  Hammer and Tongs were captured by Chariot and are currently serving time in prison.  Their armor was confiscated by Quartz.

I.C.E.

The International Coalition for the Environment is a world-wide grass-roots organization headed by Phyllis Devane.  I.C.E. members have been jailed in nearly every country in the world for attempting to forcibly prevent damage to the environment by major corporations and governments.

Klash

Klash is a sonic based villain.  He uses a battlesuit that’s been modified for sonic attacks, and seems to have some natural abilities as well.   Klash operates as a member of the Mockery Brigade.

Lightning Girl

Lightning Girl is a Minneapolis based heroine who can channel and harness electricity.   Lightning Girl is often seen working with Hammer.

Lightstar

Lightstar is one of the few telepathic heroes in the United States.  Lightstar is an irregular superhero and operates out of Williamsburg.  Most of his involvement in cases is as a consultant for other heroes.

Marianne Millikin

Marianne Millikin is a staff reporter for the World Inquisitor, a global tabloid.   While not known to the public at large, Marianne has encountered numerous supers during the course of her career with the Inquisitor.  While mundane superheroics are more the province of responsible journalism, the Inquisitor is always interested in the fringe elements of both superhoics and science, mystics and mentalists.

Mike Alfil

Mike Alfil is a nationally syndicated columist.  His column, "In My Opinion", appears in thousands of major newspapers across the country.  Alfil is known for speaking out against superheroes, calling them untrained and little more stable than the villains they combat.  While not necessarily factual reporting, Alfil's column does sell newspapers.

The Mockery Brigade

The Mockery Brigade is a fairly well known supervillain group whose agenda is the conquest of America. Their leader, Flagstaff, is a superhuman soldier. The other known members of the team include: Greyskull, Klash, and Vivian the Sorceress. The group is considered a formidable threat, and might be one of America’s most premiere supervillain teams if it had more members.

Mortician

This vigilante is based in New Orleans, and typifies the dark supernatural side of the city.  The Mortician claims to be an angel of Death, sent to rid the world of villains.  The Mortician rarely bothers with petty crime, preferring to target those villains seen as evil.  Warrants are out for the Mortician in numerous killings of murderers and rapists.  The Mortician dresses in a dark suit with a top hat and dark glasses; he carries a cane that can be heard 'tap-tap-tapping' on the sidewalk as he approaches.

Omega Corp

Omega Corp is the leading research and development interest in the world.  Omega Corp owns a piece of every industry imaginable, and pours millions each year into research.  Often criticized for not spending enough on humanitarian concerns, the CEO of Omega Corp says "The charity of one company, no matter how large, will not cure the ills of humanity.  Humanity must do that themselves, by changing the attitudes that cause them to turn a blind eye to suffering."

Photon

Photon is a member of the Los Angeles based Guardians, recruited by Golden Gate.   Photon is a light based hero with powers similar to Golden Gate.  Rumors abound of a possible father/son relationship between the two, but so far nothing is known for certain.  Photon uses coherent blasts of light in battle, and has been known to laugh as he is hit by laser blasts.

Prism

Prism is a member of the Los Angeles based Guardians, recruited by Golden Gate.   Prism has the rather unique ability to become transparent, and to refract, reflect, or split light passing through her body.  Her main tactic in battle is to get hit by a light attack, and channel it to hit another one of the villains.  At first this was a success, but lately the trick is known.  Prism can generate laser blasts on her own, but seems to be limited to a small number per day.

Psichon

Psichon is the best known psionic supervillain.  While his career was primarily limited to robberies and other miscellaneous criminal acts, Psichon is well known for the end of his career.  He was apparently driven mad by his own telepathy, and went on a rampage killing several people he claimed were part of a conspiracy against mankind.   Psichon was captured and remanded to psychiatric care.  Psichon was presumed dead when a terrorist bomb destroyed the building in which he was housed.

Pyrotechnician

The Pyrotechnician is a non-powered villain who nevertheless keeps heroes on their toes.  An explosives expert, the Pyrotechnician has developed the use of explosives and flammables to a high degree.  He will rarely take heroes on directly, preferring to hatch schemes and lay traps.  Once a hero is trapped, the Pyrotechnician shows no mercy.  The Pyrotechnician was captured by Golden Gate in 1994 and is currently in prison.

Quartz

A federal rapid response team for super-related threats formed as a response to Cronos' attack on Washington D.C. in 1992.  Quartz is under the jurisdiction of the F.B.I., and is headed by Robert Meriwether.  Quartz maintains bases with ready teams in a dozen cities across the continental United States.

Red Dagger

Chicago based vigilante whose trademark is a dagger stroke on the palms of those he captures; he always likes to draw a small amount of blood from his victims.  Red Dagger was accused of murdering a Chicago union boss and captured in early 1997, and was revealed to be Mack Davis, a former Chicago Bears quarterback who was obsessed with performing his civic duty.

Reflection

This villain is best known for his ability to reflect certain types of attacks made against him.  The reflection is not always well directed, as evidenced in his battle against Golden Gate in which a crowd of bystanders was hit by a reflected attack.   Ironically, the media and the public seemed to blame Golden Gate for the accident.

Rhino

Rhino is a Minneapolis based super-thug who dressed like a rhinocerous and is really good at hitting things with his head.  The Rhino's career typically involves getting caught in a crime, being incarcerated, breaking out of prison, and getting caught in another crime.  The Rhino works for the underworld from time to time.

Skag Hooper

The lighter side of the supervillain trade, Skag Hooper is a mystic with the dubious specialty of cursing people.  His career so far has been cursing people and then extorting money to remove the curse.  He is currently in prison after being captured by Mark Battle.

Skein

Skein is a psychotic supervillain with the ability to use his body as a living weapon.   The origin of Skein's powers is unknown, but he uses them primarily to cause death and destruction.  Skein is currently imprisoned in Florida for multiple counts of murder.

Sons of Man

The Sons of Man is an anti-genetic engineering activist group.  While individual members of the Sons have participated in extreme activities, such as attacking persons suspected of participating in genetic experiments, the group as a whole denies the acts of these extreme individuals.  The Sons are a strong lobbying force in Washington D.C., acting to encourage stricter laws to prohibit genetic engineering.

Spectre

Spectre is another mysterious figure.  Some call him villain, some call him a harbinger of doom.  No one has ever managed to speak to Spectre but his appearances at major disasters over the past two centuries are part of recorded fact, and many scholars believe the phenomenon goes even farther back.  In each instance, Spectre appears, looking anguished and heartbroken.  He appears to be completely insubstantial.  Once Spectre appears, an explosion or other disaster is usually imminent, and he's never around when the dust settles.

Paul Stark

Paul Stark is a freelance journalist specializing in reporting on supers and super related activities.  He's most noted for an interview with Golden Gate that portrayed the hero as a man tortured by the results of his actions.  This interview received critical acclaim, but was poorly received by a public that didn't want to understand the hero.  Stark is also known for an interview with Angel, which portrayed her as a deeply disturbed woman in need of help.  Shortly after that article saw print, Stark's house burned to the ground.  Despite this, Stark's outlook on supers is generally positive, and he can be counted upon to portray supers positively.

Vagabond

The villain known as Vagabond has appeared only sporadically.  He's been known to pick a fight with everyone in a roadside bar, as well as fight publicly with supers in small towns.  Vagabond seems to look upon normal humans (and even other supers) as lesser beings.  He won't hesistate to kill, although he often seems to feel it isn't worth his time to do so.

Vivian the Sorceress

Vivian is the daughter of Sebastian the Sorceror, a mage who was consumed by his own magics.  Vivian is a current member of the Mockery Brigade, and is currently in her middle teens.  She rarely operates without the rest of the Mockery Brigade.

Zephyr

Zephyr is the world's first and preeminent speedster.  Zephyr started his career in the mid-1950's, and is still going strong today.  Experts have speculated that his increased metabolism somehow retarded his aging.  In any case, Zephyr is the master of speed.  He has been known to do one hundred laps around the world as an early morning workout, and frequently puts his skills to good use building shelters and low-income housing in cities around the world.
